SENTENCE STRESS

Watch these two YouTube videos, Sentence stress: the right actions and Sentence stress: learning how, and follow along with the activities.
For the inside view of expiratory breath control, the video (MRI) Chamber Music with Sarah Willis shows pictures of a horn player taken with a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine. It mostly shows her mouth and tongue. The first 35 seconds introduces the project and the technology. For a better understanding of speech breathing, go to 7'33" and watch section #22. This shows an axial view, with the rib cage pushing in on the lungs.
Then #23 (front view) and #24 (side view) show how the contraction of the player's abdominal muscles moves her belly contents (showing in white) upwards. These push on the underside of her diaphragm, which in turn compresses her lungs from below. This pushes air out.
In #23, notice how the heart lies on top of the diaphragm and distorts its 'dome' shape.
For another view of inspiration followed by expiration, see this short video.
You can download the slides below (together with some notes about them). This will enable you to do the practical activities off-line.
